TYPE DESIGN - CUSTOM TYPEFACE - MAY 2023
BRIEF
Creation of a custom typeface designed around the theme of Movement/Stillness.
WORK PROCESS
Starting from the theme of Movement/Stillness, I first started making preparatory sketches, after selecting a series of references that fit within the theme. The research initially focused on fluid and dynamic forms, before moving on to more static shapes or those constrained by fixed grids.
After making several trials using different methods, such as printer movements, wireframes, floral shapes, and others, the final choice was a typeface created from a fixed 4x5 grid (stillness), yet featuring fluid and circular forms (movement).
To highlight the research process, as it was a fundamental part of the font creation, I realized a small A5 booklet to show all the initial trials and starting references.
Finally, transparent pages were added with the grids used to create some of the characters.
The booklet was spiral-bound to make it easier to position the grids.
FINAL RESULT
The final result consists in a typeface in which uppercase letters differ from lowercase ones. While both follow the same grid, the uppercase letters remain compact, while the lowercase letters are composed of separate forms.
During the process, several versions of some letters emerged, which is why alternative glyphs are included. After this, punctuation marks and numbers were created (which behave like uppercase letters).
Finally, I chose the name "TechnoFlow", perfectly capturing the font's characteristics, and I designed some posters to highlight its features.
